"Where water flows, equality grows”

That is this year's statement of World Water Day. The global water crisis affects everyone, but not equally. Where people lack safe drinking water and sanitation close to home, inequalities flourish, with women and girls bearing the brunt.

How is the situation in the Netherlands?

The Netherlands is known for its water management expertise, but challenges remain:

  • The Netherlands has the worst surface water quality in the entire EU. Just 1% of Dutch surface water is “good”.
  • By 2030, the Netherlands could face structural water shortages
  • The Netherlands depends on freshwater, but pollution from pesticides, microplastics, and PFAS is threatening drinking water security.
  • Water is vital for our economy, as agriculture, shipping and industries depend on fresh water supply.

How can Dutch businesses lead on water stewardship?
